The Story Behind the Bellevue Mercantile Company

The Story Behind the Bellevue Mercantile Company

I love design. In 2010, I graduated with a degree in Fine Arts, emphasizing in Graphic Design. My career since then has been focused on creating visually compelling work. Good design can tell a story. Great design can tell a story while also solving a problem. I believe that great design in a home is no different.

I’m a perpetual collector. My husband, Shawn, would say I’m a hoarder. Truly, I just love to find things that bring me joy and find a place for them in our home. Vintage furniture, found objects, architectural items, if it strikes a chord with me, I’m sold. What really gives me joy though is allowing those same pieces to solve problems in our home. A ladder in a corner with a collection of cozy throws is not only beautiful - but functional. A well loved, vintage buffet can also serve as a compact entertainment center. Solving those problems with one of a kind pieces is something I love.

This hobby has manifested over the years into a desire to open a retail shop. While I love to collect these things for my house, I’ve also enjoyed finding the balance between form & function in the homes of my friends and family. Since then, I’ve been drawn to the idea of curating objects into a collection of products that I could share with everyone. And so the seed for the Mercantile was planted.

To be honest with you, the process of making the leap from dream to reality happened in a matter of days. After reading an inspiring book about getting after dreams and a milestone birthday I asked myself, “If not now, when?” I told Shawn that I wanted to do this but that we should consider starting a mobile shop to kick start the process. After all - Shawn runs his own successful construction company, we have two young kids, and I love what I do full-time. We started looking for something that would work and happened upon a cute little 1991 step van that used to be a delivery truck. I say little - but she’s not little at all. The box of the truck is 18’ long, 8’ wide, and just shy of 8’ tall. Perfect for a shop on wheels - so we made her ours.

Everything since then has been a whirlwind. Drafting business plans, researching vendors, planning the interior build out, and all the other things that come with starting a new business. All of this planning has led to the Bellevue Mercantile Company, a mobile shop for your home and life. The truck will be completely finished on the inside with wall coverings, flooring, displays, and more. We will stock the Mercantile with found objects salvaged from a time gone by, current yet classic home decor, and locally made goods.

I’m so excited to start curating a collection of products that are affordable yet still allow you to bring style into your home. If you are curious as to what we will have to offer, below is a list of items we are currently collecting to stock the truck.

  • Home: Tabletop Decor, Wall Hangings, Crates & Baskets, Florals, Pillows, Throws, Textiles, Small Furniture
  • Found Objects: Windows, Ladders, Architectural Items, Vintage Items
  • Lifestyle: Organic Soaps, Lotions, Lip Balms, Soy Candles & Wax Melts, Accessories

There is so much work to be done and we are hopeful for a Spring start. The Mercantile will be open on select weekends in the Spring, Summer, and Fall months (weather permitting). A full schedule of pop up events will be posted in the coming weeks and updated as we secure more dates.

I can’t wait to start this journey and I hope you’ll be along for the ride. We have a lot of work to do but we look forward to getting after it!

See you on the road,

taylor
